Bonland History
Founded in May 1956, by Ernest
Boniface and Arthur Udland, Bonland Industries, as it is now
known, was incorporated as A&E Sheet Metal Co., Inc. Due to
expansion in 1957, the company moved out of its original
location in West Orange and into a larger space in Clifton, NJ.
In 1961, the company officially changed its name to Bonland
Sheet Metal Co., Inc. A year later, in 1962, Bonland once again
moved to larger quarters in Wayne, NJ, where it still resides
today. Due to increased sales volume in 1968, Bonland’s Wayne
facility was expanded to 27,000 square feet of production
space. With such expansion came further technological
advancement as Bonland developed truck lifts with the capability
of loading duct containers onto any floor of a building
utilizing cranes. Additionally, Bonland manufactured custom
trucks designed to ship one to four containers per shipment.
In 1976, Ernest Boniface bought
Arthur Udland’s interest and renamed the company, Bonland
Industries, Inc. Three years later, in 1979, Bonland showed its
commitment to continuous innovation as it bought its first
computer system. The Prime 300 Computer System, as it was
called, boasted 64K of main memory (RAM) and the ability to have
eight (8) users; qualities which made this system
technologically advanced for its time. In 1983, Bonland
draftsmen began working with CAD and eventually developed a
proprietary CAD/CAM system based on manufacturing practices and
capabilities. The CAD system downloaded information to
Production, assuring accuracy and up to date as-builts.
Reaching a second generation,
Bill Boniface was elected to serve as President and Chief
Executive Officer in 1986. Within three years, Production was
able to reduce their turnaround time from 15 to 10 days. In
1990, both Bill and Andy Boniface purchased Ernest Boniface’s
interest in the company. Bill Boniface continued to serve as
President and C.E.O. with Andy Boniface serving as Executive
Vice President. Working collaboratively as one team, Bonland
Industries developed its mission statement;
“To be the premier
airside HVAC contractor recognized by our customers and
employees as the leader in the industry.”
With a customer base including
construction managers, general contractors, mechanical
contractors, architects, engineers, and owners; Bonland
understood early on that it must constantly refine and
accelerate its performance in every aspect of its operation in
order to prosper and grow. The most modern management
techniques were adopted and Bonland focused on serving its
customers better than the competition in both cost and quality.
In 1995, Bonland instituted
“Just-In-Time” production methods, freeing up 7,000 square feet
of production space. Given its lean production methods, in 1997
Bonland was able to undergo a major office renovation at its
Wayne facility; converting over 6,700 square feet of production
space into new offices. Along with the growth at home, Bonland
also expanded geographically, opening a second branch in
Lakewood, NJ to service the southern portion of the state. This
new branch added 12,000 square feet of office and manufacturing
space. During this period of growth, Production further reduced
its turn-around time to 6 days.
Operating out of the Wayne facility,
Bonland began serving the five Boroughs of New York as it opened its
New York City Branch in 1999. This year marked numerous changes in
Bonland’s operations. The first of such changes included
Production’s ability to work three continuous shifts, allowing for
24 hour manufacturing. Secondly, Bonland incorporated many upgrades
to their systems including the use of barcodes. This process
enabled Production to color code and check out manufactured duct,
thus allowing for special fabrication instructions to be given to
Production as well as confirmation of shipped pieces of duct. This
process of color coding also gave Bonland the ability to label
ductwork according to the specific floor locations that it was to be
installed.
In 2004, a new coil line machine
was purchased and installed at the Wayne manufacturing facility.
Additionally, Bonland began to revamp systems to utilize a WEB based
platform to allow information to begin to flow seamlessly throughout
all branches of the company. From the initial bid through the final
completion of a project, the new systems gave management and staff
the ability to track job information, customer contacts, the
scheduling and progress of drafting, production, and installation
departments. In 2005, Bonland purchased a 40,000 square foot
building in the Bronx to further establish the NYC Branch. One year
later, on May 21, 2006, Bonland celebrated its 50 Year
Anniversary. Shortly thereafter, in 2007, a second coil line was
added and installed in the Bronx location. This allowed the NYC
branch to take on any project manufacturing requirements and serve
its customers the same way in which it had in New Jersey for
decades. That same year, Bonland Industries celebrated the 10-Year
Anniversary of its Lakewood Branch. In 2008, Bonland further
renovated its Bronx facility, resulting in a more efficient work
environment with increased flow, storage, and office space. The
next year, Bonland continued its strong growth by introducing a
fourth branch in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania.
Bonland’s dedication to innovation
has recently placed the company in the forefront of the BIM
revolution. Recognized, in the industry, as being a leader in
technological innovation, the Bonland Team has fully committed its
resources to driving the cost out of construction through
Building Information Management (BIM) and true 3-D representations
of projects. Having fully invested in this cutting edge technology,
Bonland can digitally build its projects in a 3-D environment before
a single shovel has been driven into the ground. Bonland’s
experience has shown that BIM projects can dramatically increase
efficiency and reduce overall costs through the reduction of change
orders, free flow of information and decrease in material clashes
between trades. Bonland also offers full BIM coordination services
which ensure a smooth and productive life cycle from a job’s start
to finish. With the combined resources of four branches, twenty-two
Detailers, and a team of Coordination Integrators, Bonland has the
ability to digitally tackle any design scope regardless of the size
or schedule.
Today, Bonland Industries maintains
a high-speed Local Area Network (LAN) hosting more than 125 systems
in all branches. Its network consists of the latest Information
Technology, including Microsoft’s Office automation suite and the
latest Windows network operating system, and UNIX. The North
Jersey, South Jersey, New York City, and Pennsylvania facilities are
networked via T1 circuit, enabling video conferencing, the sharing
of resources and the ability for employees to seamlessly share
information to efficiently manage all aspects of its projects.
Every aspect of the company is computerized from estimating through
installation. Bonland currently has a full staff of CAD draftsmen
and is able to convert disks supplied by architectural and
engineering firms that have systems unlike ours (AutoCad, Micro
Station, Intellicad, etc.). Bonland has taken the coordination lead
on some of the most complicated pharmaceutical work in New Jersey
and is poised to continue performing such high quality work in the
future.
